Traditionally this is a quiet time of year for people helping others to lose weight. If you are going on holiday you may feel it is hopeless trying to stick to a diet in summer and if you are on holidays with your children it may be tough avoiding those treats that you think you really crave.
I often hear clients tell me they’ve struggled sticking to diets on holidays or in summer but then they look in the mirror at their bodies in summer clothes or worse still look at the holiday photos and are devastated by the images.
I really feel for them; there was a time it was like that for me too. However, two years ago I took the plunge and changed my life and dropped 2 dress sizes by starting the week before I went on my summer holidays. I’ve documented many times before on the blog exactly how my weight loss journey began but I wanted to give you a few tips for making this summer the start of yours:
- Summer is a time when there are so many fresh ingredients around that have been grown and sourced locally. Make a pact with yourself, wherever you are in the world, that you will eat nutritious fresh food this summer, and not worry about calorie counting. How does this work? Well, the less processed food you eat and the more natural foods you eat the more you’ll find that you have that healthy diet you’ve been trying to achieve. Mix in the vow to really taste and enjoy your food too!
- Use the better weather and the kids being off school as a really good excuse to get out in the fresh air. It doesn’t have to be a hike or a sprint, just move a bit more and do it outdoors. Exercise done outside is better for you and uses more calories (I’m not sure why, but it does). Try and make it a habit to move a bit more and you may feel inclined to keep it up into the Autumn.
- Ditch the negativity. If you tell yourself that you can’t lose weight in Summer it will become a self-fulfilling prophesy. Of course you can, and you can do it without a diet in sight if you really believe in your ability. You can lose weight, get fit and live a more healthy lifestyle any time of year, you just need a plan and a bit of self belief.
