Back to school already!
It really is that time again. The school holidays are over and the children are going back or maybe yours are just starting this year. For mums it is a great time of year because it is like New Year all over again. We can start over, take up something new and make a fresh start.
Often, we find that our circumstances change as the new school year starts. The children are that bit older so they may have clubs and classes that change, they may need collecting at different times, if you have a new starter you may be finding you have more freedom without them at home or maybe you’ll have less freedom as you increase your work hours.
Whatever your circumstances it is a chance to take stock, rethink where you are going and what you want to achieve. You can do this for any and all aspects of your life, but in particular if your weight loss has taken a dip in the holiday period you can regroup and push forward.
5 Steps to Your New Start
Find your goal There are some really important points to consider when you write down your goals. To start with, you must make sure that the goals are what you really want, not what you think you want or what you wanted last time and failed to achieve. The second point is to write them in the present tense with a date and what you are doing, for example, “it is the 4th December 2012 and I am wearing size 10 jeans to my daughter’s birthday party”.
Plan your strategy So now that you know your new plans for the new term, you have your schedule, you know when your free time is. This is when you can look at how you can make your goals a reality. When will you have time to hit the gym? How will you plan your shopping? What can you do to increase your motivation? Do you need any help or support from others like your partner, friends or parents? What days do you find it difficult to cook and how will you overcome this? (Mine is Thursday, btw!)
Take action If you goals are written out beautifully and stuck on the fridge, you have your strategy all neatly typed up and in your diary then that’s great. BUT… it isn’t happening. You MUST take action, you MUST stick to your plan and you MUST make it happen. It’s great that you made that decision but it won’t move you anywhere nearer to that goal if you just sit and look at it.
Change course if you need to This is not a ‘get off the hook’ clause, this is about being realistic and not letting minor setbacks and spanners in the works allow you to forget the whole thing. Life always gets in the way. It is never plain sailing, so you need to adjust course without letting go of the drive, the action and the goal.
