Last night my 5 year old, Titch (so called because not only is she the youngest but she is also small for her age) cried non stop for about an hour, including all through dinner. Why did she do this? Because she didn’t want what I was cooking for dinner, she wanted a sandwich.
Sandwiches would have been a much easier dinner (although my oldest isn’t keen) and having worked all day I could really have done without the added pressure of spending time in the kitchen cooking chicken fried rice for 5.
About 12 months ago we did not often eat together as a family. Having spent the last 15 years on ‘a diet’ of one sort or another, cooking for myself and the young family I had rarely married up. I spent most of their early years cooking seperate meals and Mr S and I ate later on after the children were in bed.
A year ago, however, I found myself looking at a new way of losing weight. I gave up dieting and started on the road to permanent weight loss using hypnotherapy. Whilst speaking to my therapist and coach I also realised that sitting down together, eating family meals would be of enourmous benefit not only to me but to my family in a number of ways;
- I could plan our evening meals in advance and shop accordingly
- I could cook one evening meal and not two, drastically reducing my workload
- I could be a role model for my 3 young impressionable girls, eating normally and sensibly
- I would eat less take away, as I wouldn’t be too tired to cook by the time it got to my dinner time
- We would have one quality interaction every day as a family, sharing our achievements and events of the day
Over the last 12 months whilst I have eaten family meals with my children each evening I have also lost 3 dress sizes. They have not seen me on a fad diet, they have joined with me eating sensible healthy family meals, treats and desserts occasionally and ice creams on hot days. They have a much healthier mum, a more positive mum a much thinner mum and no hang ups about the food they eat.
Using the power of hypnotherapy, it doesn’t matter where I am or what kind of food I am presented with; family meals, dinner out at a friends or even in a restaurant, I have the tools I need to keep losing the weight and eating healthily for ever.
So, one evening, maybe we’ll have sandwiches for dinner but last night, we all, even Titch eventually, had chicken and liked it!
