This week I watched The King’s Speech and really enjoyed it. If you’re not familiar with it, the lovely Colin Firth plays King George VI struggling to overcome a stammer in order to make public speeches, the largest of which we see in the film, given at the outbreak of WWII. It’s a really great film, not just because of the story of his accession, or indeed the combination of both Colin Firth and Guy Pierce appearing in it but because it has so much to say about overcoming obstacles and achieving goals including your weight loss goals.
Firth’s character spends a large amount of time struggling with his impediment. Like many of my weight loss clients, he has struggled with the issue for most of his life and he finds it difficult to discuss. It impacts on his family life affecting his relationship with his children and there are times (many) when he wants to give up.
How many times have you been there. Wishing you could do it differently, finding it hard to shift the pounds or stick to the diet?
Throughout the story he wavers but always comes back, finds his support and works through determined to beat it.
There’s nothing stopping you getting to your weight loss goal except you. Your mindset and determination are the only things that will get you there. You can choose to work at it and succeed eventually, or you can choose to be defeated and give up now.
Of course you can have support. Instrumental in the King’s success was his speech therapist but he could only do so much. When it comes down to it, belief in your ability is so much more powerful than any diet or exercise programme.
If you feel your resolve going over the next few days, remember that your mindset is the most powerful tool you gave at your disposal, but you also have support. I am happy to support you through Facebook or twitter. Or ask a question in the comments below. Or, read how, until 31st December 2011, you can have FREE weight loss support.
