You know there are some days when you wonder why you bother? Well, I’m having one of those. I work in the weight loss ‘industry’, that is to say that I help women to stop binge eating and emotional eating and self harming with food. But looking through Google, Pinterest, Twitter even Facebook, I see lots of other people selling weight loss, slimming pills, weird belly fat shrinking tips that supposedly the stars have used and it frustrates me. Here I am, battling to help people feel good about themselves and start eating in a sensible and reasonably easy way and my competitors are selling the ‘easy button’, the ‘quick fix’, the placebo, the body guilt and the impossible dream.
You see, for most busy women, they don’t have the time to train in the way that these people are claiming is ‘the way’. They don’t want to add cinnamon to everything they eat and nor do they want to be surviving on potions made of protein powder and cold tea. They want to sit down with their families at the end of a busy day and eat a reasonable meal that will keep them full and satisfied and allow them to still lose weight. My clients want to set an example to their children with a healthy diet, whilst enjoying the occasional meal out or glass of wine. They want to eat real food, to not be frightened of food and they want to love their bodies.
And yet, when we get to the stage that we know we need to do something, the point at which we are so desperate to change our body shape or lose that weight, we are swayed by the promises of super-toned abs, losing 10 pounds in 7 days, and the motivational input telling us that we just need to feel motivated and it will all be ok.
Wouldn’t you rather lose weight over time. Wouldn’t you rather lose it and never gain it back (because a slow loss is the only way to ensure this). Wouldn’t you rather eat real food and not substitutes, uninspiring concoctions or weird and wacky combinations (think protein only for 14 days).
For most people, any diet / system / lifestyle change / just eating healthy will only serve to have you gain weight and feel worse about your body. That’s right, for the majority of people who start a weight loss system / diet / lifestyle change they will gain back the weight and add more after they stop doing it. The ONLY way to lose weight is to understand why you eat when you do and why you eat what you do. Change the way you think about food, change the way you feel physically when you are eating so that you can feel when you have eaten enough and rebuild a normal relationship with food and your body.
I’m trying to shout this as loud and as far as I can because I want women like you to stop wasting their time and their money on systems and programmes that just can’t help them in the long term but somehow every time I put my head out there I get shouted down by supporters of this diet and that system. Please… spread the word that diets and ‘systems’ are not going to help you feel good about your body and lose weight in the long term.
